This fly primarily infests ripening or damaged fruits rich in sugars. Major host crops include pineapples, citrus fruits, grapes, figs, and a variety of other fruits or vegetables that have begun the fermentation process or possess broken skin, which makes them highly attractive to ovipositing females.
The biological cycle of this fly is remarkably fast, significantly influenced by high temperatures. Females deposit eggs directly into the fruit pulp or through cracks in the rind. The emerging larvae feed voraciously on the fruit tissues, facilitating the rapid breakdown of plant structures and providing an entry point for secondary microorganisms.
The damage caused by these flies manifests as rapid tissue softening, discoloration, and a distinct odor of decay. The primary harm is the total loss of marketability and nutritional value of the crops, coupled with the potential for spreading fruit rot pathogens through contaminated harvesting equipment or fruit-to-fruit contact.

- employing bait traps containing fermented substances to monitor and reduce adult populations;
- ensuring rapid post-harvest cooling to slow down larval development;
