Description

The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) belongs to the family Picidae and is the largest woodpecker species in its range. While it plays a natural role in forest ecosystems, it is often classified as a pest in managed forestry and orchards due to the damage it inflicts on standing timber.

This bird primarily targets mature coniferous and deciduous trees, including spruce, pine, and oak. It is attracted to trees suffering from infestations of wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles and longhorn beetles, which serve as its primary food source during the winter and breeding seasons.

The biological life cycle of the black woodpecker involves carving out large, deep nesting cavities in trunks. This excavating activity often removes significant portions of the bark and phloem, which can lead to localized necrosis or the girdling of the tree if the damage is extensive enough.

The severity of the damage is characterized by large, deep, rectangular or oval holes that expose the inner wood to the elements. This physical destruction reduces the timber quality and provides an entry point for fungal spores, bacteria, and subsequent secondary insect infestations that can eventually kill the tree.

Management strategies focus on reducing the attractiveness of the area to woodpeckers and maintaining overall stand health:

  • Removal of infested, dying, or dead trees that harbor insect populations.
  • Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) to control wood-boring insect populations.
  • Use of visual or acoustic deterrents to keep birds away from high-value plantation areas.
  • Application of specialized wound dressings to trees that have already sustained minor damage to prevent rot.
