Description
The chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) is a significant pest of the order Hymenoptera, family Cynipidae. Originally native to China, it has become a major invasive threat to chestnut forests and orchards globally, severely impacting the production of sweet chestnuts.
This insect primarily infests trees of the genus Castanea. The presence of the pest is indicated by the formation of galls, which are abnormal growths on stems, leaves, and buds. In cases of heavy infestation, the wasp can cause dieback of twigs and drastically reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the trees.
The biological cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adult wasps emerge in early summer to lay eggs into the dormant buds. After hatching, the tiny larvae remain quiescent within the buds through the winter, protected from external environmental factors and most chemical treatments.
In spring, as the tree begins its growth phase, the larvae induce the formation of characteristic galls. These galls provide both nutrition and protection for the developing larvae. This process disrupts the development of flowers and fruit, leading to significant yield losses that can reach up to 80% in susceptible orchards.
