Description

Systematic position: The cotton stainer bug (Dysdercus fasciatus) is a true bug belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pyrrhocoridae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest of cotton crops, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes substantial yield losses.

Host plants and damage: The insect primarily targets cotton (Gossypium spp.), but also feeds on okra, hibiscus, and various wild weeds within the Malvaceae family. Both nymphs and adults pierce the bolls with their mouthparts to extract sap and nutrients, which disrupts the development of the fiber and causes the seeds to fail to mature.

Biology and life cycle: Dysdercus fasciatus undergoes incomplete metamorphosis consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are laid in clusters in moist soil or organic debris. Under optimal conditions, the insect can complete its life cycle in about 30 days, leading to overlapping generations throughout the cotton growing season.

Harmfulness: The pest is notorious for causing «stained cotton.» Beyond direct tissue damage, the insects introduce fungal spores of Nematospora species into the bolls through their feeding punctures. This leads to severe internal rot, fiber discoloration, and a major reduction in both the quantity and quality of the harvest.

Control measures: Management of the cotton stainer requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Strict removal of alternative host weeds like wild hibiscus around field margins.
  • Crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
  • Timely harvesting of cotton to prevent infestation of mature bolls.
  • Targeted application of insecticides during the flowering and boll-setting stages when thresholds are reached.
