Description

The cotton stainer (Dysdercus fulvoniger) is a true bug belonging to the family Pyrrhocoridae, order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical regions, primarily affecting cotton production by infesting the maturing bolls of the plant.

This pest primarily feeds on the seeds and bolls of cotton plants. While cotton is the main host, the insect can also thrive on other plants within the Malvaceae family and occasionally on some legumes. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the seed, they extract nutrients, which stunts seed development.

The life cycle of the cotton stainer consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in the soil or under leaf litter. Given favorable temperatures, the species completes multiple generations per year, allowing populations to escalate rapidly if control measures are not implemented early in the season.

The primary damage occurs when the bug introduces fungi into the cotton boll while feeding. This fungal infection leads to stained, poor-quality lint that is often referred to as "stained cotton." This reduces the commercial value of the harvest, as the damaged fiber is brittle, discolored, and unsuitable for high-quality textile manufacturing.
