Description

Taxonomic position. Dysdercus haemorrhoidalis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pyrrhocoridae, commonly known as red bugs or firebugs. It is a significant agricultural pest widely recognized for its preference for feeding on plants within the Malvaceae family.

Host plants. This species primarily targets cotton crops, causing substantial economic losses. Beyond cotton, it frequently infests related plants such as hibiscus and okra. It can also sustain itself on various wild malvaceous weeds, which often act as bridge hosts throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically lay batches of eggs in moist soil or under organic debris. Nymphs go through several molting stages, gradually developing their wings and characteristic bright coloration while staying near their food sources.

Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the developing seeds of their host plants. This feeding activity not only drains nutrients from the fruit but also introduces pathogens. Such damage can lead to fruit abortion, stunted seed development, and severe staining or degradation of the cotton fiber.
