Description
The Red cotton stainer (Latin: Dysdercus koenigii) belongs to the family Pyrrhocoridae. It is a significant agricultural pest widely distributed across Asia, primarily known for causing severe economic losses in cotton-producing regions by damaging both the quality and quantity of the harvest.
The pest primarily feeds on plants from the Malvaceae family. While cotton remains its most economically important host, it also infests other species such as hibiscus and various malvaceous weeds, which often serve as reservoirs for the pest population between planting seasons.
Its life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern: egg, nymph (five instars), and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in moist soil or plant debris. The speed of development is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with warmer climates facilitating faster reproduction and multiple generations annually.
The primary damage is inflicted by nymphs and adults piercing cotton bolls to extract juices from developing seeds. This feeding process results in stunted seed growth and, more importantly, stains the lint with internal excreta and associated fungal infections, which renders the cotton fibers low-grade.
Effective control strategies integrate chemical and cultural practices. Cultural management involves removing host weeds, early destruction of crop residues after harvest, and deep tillage. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is generally reserved for outbreaks where the pest population exceeds the economic threshold.
