Description

Taxonomic position. The insect Dysdercus obscuratus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pyrrhocoridae. These insects are commonly known as cotton stainers due to the damage they cause to cotton bolls and the subsequent staining of the fiber by fungal growth introduced by their feeding activities.

Host crops. The primary host for this pest is cotton (Gossypium spp.). In addition to commercial cotton fields, Dysdercus obscuratus thrives on various wild plants within the Malvaceae family. These alternate hosts act as crucial reservoirs, allowing the pest population to persist and spread when primary crops are not available.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in protected environments, such as damp soil or debris near host plants. Nymphs pass through five instars, progressively increasing in size. Warm and humid conditions significantly accelerate the development of each generation.

Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing cotton bolls with their stylets to suck sap from the developing seeds. This feeding process facilitates the entry of pathogenic fungi into the bolls. The result is stained, weakened, or completely destroyed fiber, alongside reduced seed viability, which leads to substantial financial losses for growers.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:

  • rigorous sanitation and removal of Malvaceae weeds in and around fields;
  • deep tillage to disrupt overwintering sites;
  • the timely application of insecticides when threshold populations are reached.
Monitoring fields during the boll-filling stage is critical to prevent severe outbreaks and maximize yield quality.
