Systematic position: Dysdercus ruficollis is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pyrrhocoridae. It is widely recognized as a significant pest of cotton crops in South and Central America, often causing severe impact on yield quality and quantity.

Host plants: The primary host plant for this insect is cotton. However, it also feeds on various wild and cultivated species within the Malvaceae family. These plants act as secondary hosts, allowing the population to persist throughout the year when cotton is not available.

Biology and life cycle: These bugs undergo incomplete metamorphosis, passing through egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females typically lay their eggs in moist soil or plant crevices. Nymphs pass through five instars before reaching adulthood. The rate of development is highly influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, which dictate the number of generations per season.

Damage and economic importance: The cotton stainer bug feeds by piercing the cotton boll and extracting nutrients from the developing seeds. During feeding, it secretes enzymes into the plant tissue, which leads to the staining of the lint and the promotion of secondary fungal infections. This damage renders the cotton fiber discolored, weak, and unsuitable for high-quality industrial processing.
