The cotton stainer bug (Dysdercus voelkeri) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the family Pyrrhocoridae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically adapted to feed on Malvaceae species, with a particular destructive impact on cotton plantations in tropical regions.

Host crops and impact
The primary host plant for this species is cotton. The bugs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate developing cotton bolls. By feeding on the developing seeds, they cause severe physiological stress to the plant and promote the development of fungi, which stains the lint and compromises its structural integrity.

Biology and life cycle
Dysdercus voelkeri undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, passing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female typically lays eggs in moist soil or plant debris. The nymphs are highly mobile and start feeding on plant sap soon after hatching. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect can produce several generations per year, maintaining a constant presence in the field.

Damage patterns
The damage caused by the cotton stainer is twofold: direct feeding damage and indirect transmission of pathogens. Direct feeding results in shriveled seeds and stunted growth. Indirectly, the bugs introduce fungi into the bolls, which leads to the staining of fibers—a phenomenon known as «stained cotton,» rendering the harvest economically unviable.

Management strategies
Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach to pest management:

• Cultural practices such as crop rotation and the removal of alternative wild host plants.
• Post-harvest field sanitation, including the destruction of crop residues to eliminate overwintering sites.
