Taxonomic classification: The onion moth (Dyspessa ulula) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Cossidae. Unlike common leaf-eating moths, this species is a specialized stem and bulb borer that targets specific crops within the Alliaceae family.
Host plants and damage: The primary hosts for Dyspessa ulula include onions, garlic, and wild onions. The larvae bore into the bulb, consuming the plant tissue from the inside. This internal feeding causes the plant to wither and eventually rot, making the produce unfit for commercial use or long-term storage.
Biology and lifecycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil or inside infested bulbs.
