Primarily inhabiting South American ecosystems, this species is noted for its large larval stage which can occasionally reach population densities that threaten local vegetation. The host range of Eacles penelope includes a variety of trees and shrubs. The caterpillars are voracious feeders, consuming leaves at a rapid rate during their late larval instars. This defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, causing significant stress and potentially stunting the development of young trees in sensitive ecosystems.

The biological cycle follows the classic transformation stages: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. The larvae emerge and start feeding immediately on available foliage. As they grow through several instars, they require increasing amounts of biomass. The pupal stage is generally spent in the soil or in leaf litter, where the organism enters diapause to survive unfavorable climatic conditions.

The primary damage caused by this pest is heavy leaf loss. Extensive defoliation can lead to twig dieback, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and fungal infections. In forest nurseries or ornamental landscapes, the presence of these caterpillars is easily detected by the presence of large quantities of frass (larval droppings) beneath the canopy.

During the larval stage, if infestation thresholds are exceeded, the application of biological control agents, such as specific viral or bacterial insecticides, is recommended. Maintaining tree health through proper nutrition and hydration also helps plants tolerate occasional light feeding.
