Eburia pilosa

Eburia pilosa belongs to the family of longhorned beetles (Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily targets the internal tissues of woody plants, utilizing the host tree for both shelter and nutrition during its larval development stage.

The beetle typically infests a range of broad-leaved trees, with a preference for citrus orchards and ornamental species. It tends to favor hosts that are already experiencing stress due to drought, physical damage, or poor soil conditions, although a high population density can lead to attacks on healthier, robust trees in the surrounding area.

The biological cycle of this pest is highly specialized. After mating, the female beetle deposits eggs into the crevices of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries. These galleries can extend for significant distances, with the larvae remaining inside the wood for extended periods, sometimes spanning several years before pupation occurs.

The primary damage caused by Eburia pilosa is the destruction of the cambium layer and the disruption of the vascular system. This blockage prevents the movement of water and nutrients, resulting in visible symptoms such as yellowing foliage, dieback of the crown, and eventual tree mortality. Infestations are often identified by the presence of frass (sawdust-like excrement) appearing at the base of the tree or near bark fissures.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest control methods. The most crucial step is the removal and destruction of heavily infested limbs or dead trees to eliminate breeding sites. Cultural practices like proper irrigation and balanced fertilization are essential to increase tree vigor. In commercial settings, systemic insecticide injections into the trunk or localized spraying during adult activity can effectively reduce the risk of infestation.
