Ecdytolopha is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tortricidae, in the order Lepidoptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in agriculture due to their larvae's ability to bore into plant tissues. The most notorious species, such as Ecdytolopha aurantiana, are known for their destructive impact on citrus production in various regions of the world.
The primary hosts of Ecdytolopha include various fruit-bearing crops, with citrus trees being the most frequent target. The larvae penetrate the fruit surface to feed on the internal tissues. This feeding behavior not only destroys the fruit pulp but also disrupts the physiological development of the plant, often leading to the abscission of infested fruits.
The biological life cycle of Ecdytolopha consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the surface of young fruits or leaves.
