Description
The chestnut leaf miner (Ectoedemia castaneae) is a small moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nepticulidae. This insect is recognized as a specific pest that primarily infests trees of the genus Castanea.
Adult moths are quite tiny, often making them difficult to spot during standard field monitoring. The larval stage, however, is the most destructive phase, as the caterpillars spend their entire development period hidden inside the internal layers of the host's leaves.
The biological cycle of this pest is synchronized with the seasonal development of chestnut trees. Females typically deposit eggs on the leaf surface; shortly after hatching, the larvae mine into the leaf tissue, consuming the chlorophyll-containing parenchyma and leaving distinct winding tunnels behind.
The damage caused by these larvae results in the premature yellowing, browning, and senescence of leaves. In cases of high infestation intensity, the tree may suffer from severe defoliation, which hampers its photosynthetic capacity and reduces the overall vigor of the host plant throughout the growing season.
Management strategies for controlling this pest include:

- Monitoring adult populations using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
