Poplar leaf miner

The Poplar leaf miner (Ectoedemia populella) is a small moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nepticulidae. Known for its cryptic lifestyle, this insect is a significant pest of poplar trees (Populus species), often found in forests, urban parks, and nurseries where these trees are planted for landscaping or commercial use.

Host plant specificity is high, with the larvae exclusively consuming the leaf tissue of various poplar species. The larvae are leaf miners, meaning they spend the majority of their juvenile life inside the leaf blade. This behavior allows them to avoid direct contact with external predators and many contact insecticides, making them difficult to control.

The life cycle of Ectoedemia populella follows a complete metamorphosis. Adult moths emerge in the spring, mating and laying eggs on the host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin mining, creating distinct tunnels as they consume the green tissue. Pupation usually occurs in the soil or under debris, where the insect overwinters.

Damage caused by this pest is easily identifiable by the characteristic serpentine or blotch mines visible on the leaf surface. High-density infestations significantly decrease the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, which can lead to canopy thinning, early chlorosis, and premature leaf drop, ultimately reducing the vigor and aesthetic value of the poplar trees.
