Description
Systematic position: The maple leaf miner (Ectoedemia sericopeza) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nepticulidae. This small moth is known for its larvae's ability to feed on maple seeds and leaves, often causing aesthetic and physiological damage to host trees.
Host plants: The insect primarily attacks trees of the genus Acer. The Norway maple (Acer platanoides) is the most frequent host. It is commonly found in urban environments, ornamental gardens, and forests where these specific maples are abundant.
Biology and life cycle: The insect completes its life cycle in several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. It typically overwinters as a pupa in the soil or leaf litter beneath the trees. Adult moths emerge in the spring to lay eggs. Depending on the latitude and temperature, the species can produce one or two generations per year.
Damage and harmfulness: The larvae cause distinct damage. The first generation feeds internally on the samaras (seeds), preventing germination. Later generations mine the leaves, creating serpentine tracks or blotches. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop and canopy thinning, which negatively impacts the tree's photosynthesis and overall vitality.
Protection measures: Management strategies are focused on sanitation and chemical intervention. Proper hygiene, such as removing fallen leaves and turning the soil under the tree canopy in the autumn, helps reduce the overwintering population. In cases of severe infestation, systemic insecticides can be applied during the early larval stage to stop the development of mines.
