Description
Elaphidion is a genus of longhorned beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae, within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are widely recognized as significant wood-boring pests that primarily affect a variety of woody plants, utilizing their robust larval stages to bore through stems and branches, often causing substantial structural damage to their hosts.
The host range for Elaphidion includes numerous hardwood and coniferous species, such as citrus trees, oaks, and various ornamental trees. These insects are particularly attracted to stressed or wounded trees, although their activity can also lead to the decline of healthy plants when populations reach high densities within a given ecosystem.
The biology and lifecycle of Elaphidion are characterized by a long larval period spent inside the host's woody tissue. Adult females typically oviposit on the bark, and upon hatching, the larvae penetrate into the cambium and xylem layers. They create intricate galleries as they feed, which interrupts the nutrient and water transport systems of the tree, potentially leading to branch dieback.
Damage symptoms are often visible through the presence of frass or exit holes on the trunk and branches. As the larvae tunnel through the wood, they weaken the internal structure of the tree, leading to wind-breakage of affected limbs. This weakening makes the tree susceptible to secondary infections from fungi and other pathogens, further accelerating the decline of the infested specimen.
