Description

Elaphidion pulverulentum is a species of longhorned beetle (family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera). This wood-boring insect is known for its ability to damage various hardwood trees, posing a potential threat to both commercial orchards and ornamental landscapes by tunneling into branches and trunks.

The host range of this pest includes several deciduous tree species such as oaks, walnuts, citrus, and various fruit trees. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they feed on the vascular tissues, specifically targeting the cambium and sapwood layers, which restricts the movement of nutrients and water within the tree.

Regarding its biology, the female beetle deposits eggs in bark crevices or near buds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the wood. The larval stage is relatively long, often taking an entire season or more to complete, during which they create intricate gallery systems that structurally weaken the infested branches.

Symptoms of an infestation often include flagging or wilting of individual branches, the presence of exit holes in the bark, and the accumulation of frass (sawdust-like material) at the base of the tree or in branch crotches. Heavy infestations can lead to limb dieback and, if left unchecked, the eventual decline of the entire tree.

Effective management strategies center on sanitation. Pruning and destroying infested branches is critical to reducing the local population. In high-value orchards, systemic insecticides may be applied during the adult flight period to prevent new oviposition. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization also helps trees withstand secondary pest attacks.
