Description

The lesser cornstalk borer (Latin name Elasmopalpus lignosellus) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a significant pest of agricultural crops, particularly notorious in warm, arid environments where it can cause widespread destruction to young plantings.

This pest has a broad host range, feeding on important agricultural commodities such as corn, sorghum, peanuts, beans, and various grasses. Its ability to adapt to different plant species makes it a persistent challenge for farmers during the early growth stages of the season.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. A defining characteristic of the larva is the construction of protective, soil-covered silken tubes near the base of the host plant. These tubes allow the larva to safely move between the soil and the plant stem to feed while remaining hidden from predators.

Damage occurs primarily when larvae bore into the stalk near the soil line or girdle the plant, causing the central leaf to wilt and die, a condition often referred to as "deadheart." This feeding behavior can destroy entire seedling populations, forcing growers to replant fields and incurring significant financial losses.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as irrigation to increase soil moisture (making the environment less favorable for the pest) and prompt destruction of crop residues after harvest, are critical. Additionally, timely application of targeted insecticides during the larval stage remains the primary method for controlling outbreaks in commercial fields.
