Systematic position: The chestnut click beetle (Elatichrosis castanea) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. This beetle species is primarily known in agricultural contexts for its larval stage, widely recognized as wireworms. They are significant soil-dwelling pests that pose a persistent threat to global crop production.

Host plants: This pest exhibits a wide range of host plants, causing substantial damage to essential agricultural crops. Affected crops include cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as sunflowers and various vegetables. Their presence is often detected when crops show uneven emergence or patchy growth patterns across the field.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Elatichrosis castanea is typically multi-annual, involving several larval instars spent entirely within the soil profile. The beetles lay eggs in the soil, and the resulting larvae undergo several developmental stages. Their activity in the soil is highly dependent on moisture levels and temperature, causing them to migrate vertically within the soil horizons depending on seasonal conditions.

Damage and economic impact: Wireworms cause severe damage by feeding on seeds, germinating embryos, and roots of young plants.
