Emmalocera is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pyralidae (snout moths). As agricultural pests, they are primarily known for their larval stage, which acts as a borer, infiltrating the stems and inflorescences of various host plants. Understanding the taxonomic position of this genus is crucial for implementing targeted phytosanitary measures in affected areas.

The primary crops affected by Emmalocera species include grains such as sorghum and millet. The larvae are notorious for their feeding habits, as they tunnel through the plant tissue, which disrupts the vascular system and prevents the proper development of the grain-bearing organs. This internal feeding makes the pest particularly challenging to manage once the infestation is established.

The biology of Emmalocera follows a standard holometabolous development process. The female moth lays eggs on the host plant, and the emerging larvae immediately seek entry points to bore into the stalk. Development rates are highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels, with several generations often occurring throughout the growing season in warm climates.

The damage caused by these insects is often cumulative. Initially, the plant may show signs of yellowing or wilting. As the larvae grow, the structural integrity of the stem is compromised, often leading to lodging or the complete death of the inflorescence.
