The Red oak borer (Enaphalodes rufulus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is native to North America and is recognized as a significant pest capable of causing widespread mortality in oak-dominated forest ecosystems.
This pest primarily attacks various species within the Quercus genus, with a particular preference for red and white oaks. While it can colonize stressed trees, infestations often intensify during periods of drought or following disturbances that compromise the natural defenses of the trees, making them susceptible to larval establishment.
The life cycle of the Red oak borer is completed over a two-year period. Adult beetles emerge in the summer months to mate and oviposit in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and eventually tunnel deep into the heartwood.
