Description
Systematic position: The hop stem borer (Endoclita excrescens) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Hepialidae. This insect is a significant agricultural pest primarily found in East Asian regions, where it poses a recurring threat to industrial hop cultivation and various woody plant species.
Host crops: While the primary host is the common hop (Humulus lupulus), the larvae are polyphagous. They can infest a wide range of fruit and forest trees, including apple, walnut, alder, and willow. Their presence in nearby landscapes makes eradication from hop fields particularly challenging due to constant re-infestation pressure.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Adult moths are nocturnal and active during the summer. Eggs are laid near the base of host plants or directly onto the soil. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the roots or the lower stem, where they reside and feed for the duration of their larval stage, creating extensive tunnels inside the plant tissue.
Damage and severity: The primary damage is caused by larvae destroying the plant's vascular tissue within the roots and stem bases. This disruption prevents the transport of water and nutrients, leading to rapid yellowing, wilting, and eventually the death of the vine. Such damage not only stunts growth but also renders the plant vulnerable to secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens.
Protection measures: Controlling the hop stem borer requires a proactive approach due to the larval stage's cryptic lifestyle:
- Regular monitoring of plantation fields for signs of vine wilting or decline.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infested stems and rootstocks.
- Maintaining a clean environment by removing alternative hosts surrounding the hop garden.
- Targeted application of systemic insecticides, timed specifically to coincide with the egg-hatching and early larval boring phase before they penetrate deep into the plant.
