Description

The Verbena bud moth (lat. Endothenia hebesana) is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. As a pest, it is primarily recognized for the damage its larvae inflict on various ornamental plants and garden flowers, often going unnoticed until significant harm has been done to the foliage or blooms.

This pest affects a diverse range of host plants, including Iris, Antirrhinum (snapdragon), Dianthus, Verbena, and several species within the Asteraceae family. Its ability to infest both herbaceous perennials and annuals makes it a frequent nuisance in nurseries and private botanical collections.

The life cycle of Endothenia hebesana involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a mature larva hidden within plant debris or near the soil surface. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae pupate, eventually emerging as adult moths to start a new generation of infestation.

Damage is characterized by larvae mining the leaves, webbing together tender foliage, and tunneling into developing flower buds.
