Endrosis

Endrosis (Endrosis sarcitrella), commonly known as the white-shouldered house moth, is a significant pest of stored products belonging to the Oecophoridae family, order Lepidoptera. It is a cosmopolitan species frequently found in warehouses, grain stores, and domestic pantries worldwide.

This moth primarily targets a wide range of stored grains including wheat, barley, maize, and oats. In addition to cereals, it feeds on processed goods like flour, dried fruits, and vegetable matter. Its ability to thrive in various storage conditions makes it a persistent threat to agricultural inventories and seed stocks.

The life cycle of the Endrosis moth follows a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on or near the food source. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, actively consuming grain embryos and tunneling through kernels, which is particularly destructive for seeds intended for planting.

The damage caused by Endrosis is characterized by the presence of silk webbing that binds kernels into clumps, significantly complicating the handling and processing of the commodity. Beyond physical consumption, the larvae's waste and webbing create micro-environments that promote the growth of molds and heating in grain bulks.

Effective management requires a multi-layered approach centered on storage hygiene. Key measures include:

• Maintaining low moisture content in stored grains (below 12-14%).
• Regular cleaning of storage areas to remove debris.
• Use of pheromone traps for monitoring.
• Fumigation of grain silos when infestations are detected.
• Sealing storage structures to prevent entry.

Continuous monitoring of temperature and moisture levels is essential to prevent outbreaks. By managing the environment, farmers and warehouse managers can significantly reduce the risk of Endrosis infestation and ensure the quality of their agricultural products during long-term storage.
