Enoplocerus armillatus

Enoplocerus armillatus is a large beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles, and the order Coleoptera. It is one of the most significant wood-boring species in the Neotropical regions, recognized for its massive size and the pronounced mandibles found on the males. These insects are highly specialized in colonizing various types of hardwood trees.

The host range of this pest is quite broad, including economically important tropical crops such as cocoa trees, citrus, and various palm species. The beetles demonstrate a preference for mature and stressed trees, where they can successfully establish their larvae, leading to substantial damage to the vascular tissue and structural integrity of the host plant.

The biology of the species revolves around the larval stage, which acts as a primary wood-borer. After the eggs are deposited in bark crevices, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood. They construct extensive feeding galleries throughout the inner wood, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients throughout the tree, leading to gradual decline.

Symptoms of infestation are often not visible until the damage is severe. The presence of wood frass (sawdust-like waste) at the base of the tree and circular exit holes are key indicators. As the larvae feed, they weaken the woody structure, making the tree susceptible to secondary diseases and physical failure during strong winds or heavy rain.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this beetle involves:

• Regular field scouting to detect early signs of larval entry holes.
• Sanitation by removing and burning heavily infested branches or entire trees.
• Application of contact insecticides on tree trunks during the mating season to prevent oviposition.
• Promoting healthy tree growth through proper fertilization and irrigation to increase natural resistance.
