Description

The Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a major global pest, primarily affecting flour mills, grain processing facilities, and warehouses where dry food products are stored.

This species infests a wide variety of commodities including wheat flour, cereals, bran, cornmeal, dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate products. Its presence is especially troublesome in flour mills, where the larvae spin silk webbing that clogs machinery, conveyors, and sifters, leading to costly production delays.

The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on food surfaces, and upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding. The moth thrives in temperate indoor environments, completing its life cycle in 40–50 days, although it can enter a period of arrested development if conditions become unfavorable.

The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which produce silk threads that bind food particles into large, matted clumps. This infestation renders the food products unsalable due to contamination with feces, cast skins, and silk webbing, often resulting in secondary mold growth and moisture accumulation.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this moth:

  • Sanitation and removal of waste materials around production lines.
  • Regular cleaning of milling machinery to eliminate hidden larval niches.
  • Fumigation of structures using approved chemical agents to manage infestations.
  • Monitoring populations through the use of pheromone-baited sticky traps.
  • Cooling stored products to levels that inhibit larval development.
