Description
Taxonomy: The Bud moth (Epiblema cynosbatella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a well-known pest that causes economic damage by targeting the developing reproductive organs of various fruit trees.
Host plants: This moth species primarily attacks plants of the Rosaceae family. Its host range includes apple, pear, cherry, plum, apricot trees, as well as garden roses and wild rose (Rosa canina), often appearing in both commercial orchards and ornamental gardens.
Biology and life cycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small cocoons tucked into bark crevices or near bud scales. As temperatures rise in spring, larvae emerge to feed on budding tissues. The adult stage occurs in early summer, involving mating and egg-laying on the underside of host leaves.
Damage and severity: Larvae are most destructive during the early spring stage. By boring directly into swelling buds, they consume the primordial flowers and leaves, often destroying the potential harvest of individual spurs. Later, larvae weave leaves together with silk, creating protective shelters while they skeletonize the foliage.
Control measures: Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:
- Manual removal and destruction of infested leaf clusters in late spring.
- Scraping and removal of loose tree bark to eliminate overwintering sites.
- Application of selective insecticides at the early bud-burst stage to target emerging larvae.
- Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory birds in the orchard.
