Epilachna admirabilis

Epilachna admirabilis is a phytophagous beetle belonging to the Coccinellidae family (order Coleoptera). While most lady beetles are known as beneficial predators, this specific species is a notorious plant feeder that targets various horticultural and agricultural crops, often causing significant losses to farmers.

This pest primarily attacks plants belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins, and melons. Its host range allows it to thrive in vegetable fields where these crops are cultivated, making it a critical concern for integrated pest management in areas where the insect is present.

The life cycle of the beetle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as plant debris, leaf litter, or near forest edges. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge and migrate to host plants. The female lays eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves, which hatch into larvae that immediately begin feeding on the foliage.

Damage is characterized by the skeletonization of leaves. Both adults and larvae consume the leaf tissue while leaving the veins intact, which leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, dehydration of the plant, and stunted growth. In severe infestations, the foliage can be completely destroyed, negatively affecting the plant's ability to produce viable fruit.

Effective management strategies include a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Key practices include:

• Deep tillage of the soil to expose or bury the pupae and adults.
