Description
Systematic position: The squash lady beetle (Epilachna borealis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Coccinellidae family. Unlike its predatory relatives that feed on aphids, this beetle is a herbivorous species and acts as a primary pest for agricultural plants in the cucurbit family.
Host plants: This insect primarily targets members of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is most frequently encountered on pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and melons. During periods of high infestation, the beetle can cause significant economic losses by damaging both the foliage and occasionally the fruit skin of these crops.
Biology and life cycle: The insect completes a full metamorphosis, transitioning through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Yellow eggs are laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The spiny, yellow larvae feed voraciously on plant tissue. Adults survive the winter in sheltered areas, such as plant debris or bark crevices, emerging when temperatures rise in the spring.
Damage and pest status: The beetle and its larvae exhibit a distinct skeletonizing feeding pattern. They consume the leaf parenchyma while leaving the veins intact, which results in a characteristic lace-like appearance. Severe defoliation impairs the plant's photosynthetic ability, leading to stunted growth, fruit abortion, and significant reductions in harvest quality.
Control measures: Management strategies include cultural practices such as removing crop debris to eliminate overwintering sites and maintaining weed-free fields. For heavy infestations, chemical control with registered insecticides is recommended. Integrated pest management, including regular scouting and mechanical removal of egg masses, can be highly effective in smaller garden settings.
