Description

Systematic position. Epilachna canina belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae (ladybird beetles). Unlike the majority of its predatory relatives, this specific species is a specialized phytophagous insect, meaning it feeds exclusively on plant tissues, making it a significant agricultural pest.

Crops affected. The pest primarily targets plants within the Solanaceae family. Its host range includes economically vital crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. It can also thrive on various wild solanaceous weeds, which often serve as reservoirs for infestation during the off-season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the abaxial side of leaves. Larvae, which are characterized by spines, emerge and begin consuming the plant tissue immediately. The developmental rate is highly influenced by ambient temperature and host plant quality.

Damage patterns and economic impact. Both adults and larvae act as leaf skeletonizers. They consume the parenchyma of the leaves, leaving only the vascular system intact. This severe damage hinders photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth, reduced tuber or fruit development, and, in severe cases, the complete defoliation and death of the plant.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, removing alternate weed hosts, and plowing fields after harvest help reduce overwintering populations. Chemical control involves the use of systemic or contact insecticides during the early stages of larval development to minimize crop damage effectively.
