Epilachna clandestina is a member of the Coccinellidae family within the order Coleoptera. Unlike most lady beetles that are predatory, this species is a well-known phytophagous pest. It specializes in consuming plant tissue, making it a significant challenge for farmers in affected regions.

The primary hosts for this beetle are plants within the Solanaceae family. It is particularly notorious for damaging potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. By feeding on the foliage of these crops, the pest directly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, which hampers overall development and fruit production.

The biological development of this pest follows a complete metamorphosis cycle, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. Key methods include regular field scouting to identify infestation early, the physical destruction of crop residues where pupae may hide, and the targeted application of approved insecticides when pest density exceeds economic thresholds to minimize losses.
