Description
Systematic position: Epilachna similis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. Unlike many other ladybirds that are beneficial predators of aphids and mites, this species is a specialist herbivore known to be a significant pest for various crops in its range.
Target crops: The primary hosts of this pest are members of the Solanaceae family. Potato plants, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are most frequently affected. In some environments, the insect can also survive on wild solanaceous weeds, which may serve as an overwintering host or a reservoir for subsequent infestation of commercial fields.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults hibernate in soil debris, leaf litter, or protected sites near fields. In the spring, they emerge to feed and deposit clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae develop over several stages, feeding voraciously on the foliage before pupating directly on the plant or surrounding ground.
Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily characterized by skeletonizing leaves. Both larvae and adults scrape away the leaf tissue between the veins, leaving behind a lace-like appearance. As the infestation progresses, leaves dry out and fall, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and directly impacts the overall quality and quantity of the harvest.
Protection measures: Effective control strategies rely on an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, systematic removal of solanaceous weeds, and post-harvest sanitation are critical. In cases of severe economic damage, chemical control using approved insecticides applied during the early stages of the infestation provides the best results for minimizing losses.
