Epilachna zetterstedti

Systematic position. Epilachna zetterstedti belongs to the family Coccinellidae of the order Coleoptera. Unlike the typical predatory ladybirds, this species is a well-known herbivore. It has evolved to feed exclusively on plant tissues, which places it among the significant pests of agricultural crops in its native habitat.

Host crops. This pest primarily targets plants within the Solanaceae family. Its main hosts include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. By feeding on both cultivated varieties and wild solanaceous weeds, the beetle maintains stable populations throughout the growing season, posing a constant threat to vegetable production.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit their eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The larvae go through several developmental instars, characterized by intense feeding, before transitioning into the pupal stage, which often occurs on the leaf surface or within the canopy.

Damage and harmfulness. Adults and larvae engage in skeletonizing leaves, eating the green tissue and leaving behind a lace-like network of veins. This destructive feeding pattern severely restricts the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and significantly reduced crop yields. In severe infestations, total defoliation of the crop can occur.

Protection measures. Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep autumn plowing, and sanitation (weed control) are crucial for breaking the lifecycle. Chemical control involves the application of selective insecticides when population levels exceed the established economic thresholds.
