Epinotia

Epinotia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tortricidae, within the order Lepidoptera. These small moths are well-known in entomology for their role as serious pests in both silviculture and horticulture. The genus contains numerous species that have adapted to feed on specific host plants, ranging from deciduous fruit trees to various evergreen conifers.

The host range of Epinotia species is broad, causing damage to apple trees, plums, as well as spruce, pine, and fir. The larvae are typically leafrollers or bud borers. By feeding on the internal tissues of buds, needles, or leaves, they disrupt the normal growth processes of the plant, often leading to unsightly damage and physiological stress.

The biological development follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Most species overwinter as larvae in hibernacula created in the bark crevices or within the needles themselves. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed, synchronized with the bud burst of their host trees, which makes them particularly dangerous during the early growth season.

Damage manifests as silken webbing, frass accumulation, and characteristic leaf rolling or needle mining. The larvae protect themselves within these structures, making them less accessible to natural predators and some topical contact insecticides. Heavy infestations can lead to significant needle loss, branch dieback, and stunted tree development, especially in young nursery stock.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for Epinotia focuses on early detection through visual scouting and the use of sex pheromone traps. Control measures include the application of systemic insecticides during the peak of larval activity, the use of biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis, and proper cultural practices such as removing infested plant material to reduce the overwintering population.
