Description
The Willow shoot moth (Epinotia cruciana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This insect is a specialist pest often found in regions where willow trees are abundant, causing concern in both forestry nurseries and ornamental gardening.
The primary host plants for this species are various members of the genus Salix (willows). Occasionally, the larvae may also be found on poplars (aspen), particularly in mixed plantations. The larvae specialize in attacking the growing tips of the host plant, which can significantly affect the architectural development of young trees.
The life cycle involves one generation per year. The larvae typically overwinter in silk cocoons hidden within the bark crevices or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in early spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds, synchronization that allows them to maximize nutritional intake at the start of the growth season.
Damage symptoms are distinctive: larvae bore into developing buds, effectively destroying them, and subsequently move to newly formed leaves. They spin webbing between leaves to create shelters or "nests" where they feed, causing the foliage to curl and brown. Severe infestations can result in stunted growth and deformed branch development.
