The Fir needle tortrix (lat. Epinotia fraternana) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This moth is known for causing significant damage to fir trees (Abies), often going unnoticed until the symptoms of needle loss become severe in forest stands and landscape plantings.

Host plants primarily include various species of the genus Abies. The larvae (caterpillars) are internal feeders that burrow into individual needles. This feeding habit is characteristic of the species, as they hollow out the interior tissues, leaving the outer epidermis intact, which eventually causes the needle to wither and drop.

The life cycle of Epinotia fraternana is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in mid-summer. After mating, females lay eggs on current-year needles. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the needle, where they feed throughout the summer and autumn. They typically overwinter as mature larvae in sheltered spots like bark crevices or leaf litter.

Symptoms of infestation include premature yellowing and browning of needles, often held together by fine silk webbing produced by the larvae. The primary economic and aesthetic damage involves the premature shedding of needles, which leads to thinning crowns, reduced tree vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests like wood-boring beetles.
