Epinotia hopkinsana is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. Commonly known as the cypress tip moth, it is a significant pest of various coniferous species. While primarily noted in specific geographic regions, it poses a consistent threat to ornamental landscapes and commercial nurseries, as its feeding habits are directly destructive to the plant's terminal growth.
The primary host plants for this pest include members of the Cupressaceae family, most notably Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa), various species of arborvitae (Thuja), and junipers. Because these plants are staples in landscaping, the presence of this moth can lead to significant aesthetic degradation of hedges and foundation plantings, often necessitating professional horticultural intervention.
The life cycle of Epinotia hopkinsana is synchronized with the growth of its host plants. Adult moths deposit eggs on new foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae mine into the succulent tips of the branches to feed on the internal tissues.
