Description

Systematic position. The grey aspen leafroller (Epinotia nisella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. This species is a well-known forest pest distributed across the Holarctic region, primarily targeting species within the Salicaceae family.

Host plants and damage. The larvae feed mainly on aspen, willow, and poplar trees. The primary damage involves the destruction of reproductive structures and foliage, which weakens the host trees, slows their growth, and can result in significant defoliation in cases of severe outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle. The species completes one generation per year. It overwinters as an egg laid in bark crevices. In early spring, larvae emerge and bore into the developing catkins (male flowers), feeding on the internal tissues, which is the most critical stage for the host's reproductive success.

Damage characteristics. After consuming the catkins, the larvae move to the leaves. They construct shelters by rolling or tying leaves together with silk. Feeding within these structures causes skeletonization and deformation of the leaves, eventually leading to chlorosis and premature drop of foliage.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for this leafroller involve the use of pheromone traps to monitor population density. Chemical control with specific insecticides is recommended during the early larval stage before they roll the leaves. Cultural practices include maintaining forest health and removing heavily infested branches to reduce the pest reservoir.
