Description

Epiphora is a genus of moths belonging to the family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths). While often studied for their distinct morphology, certain members of this genus act as pests in agricultural and forestry contexts, where their larval stages can cause significant foliage loss in various host plants.

The host range of these insects typically includes several tropical and subtropical shrubs and trees. They are particularly known for affecting various acacia species and other woody plants. The presence of these pests is often dictated by the availability of preferred forage species and suitable climatic conditions for the development of larvae.

The life cycle of Epiphora follows a holometabolous development path: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most critical for agriculture, as caterpillars grow rapidly through multiple instars, consuming large amounts of leaf biomass to fuel their development and prepare for the pupal stage.

The damage caused by these caterpillars is primarily characterized by severe defoliation. In cases of high population density, the larvae can consume almost all the green matter of a host plant, which stresses the plant, limits its photosynthetic capacity, and can lead to stunted growth or even death of younger specimens.

Managing Epiphora populations requires an integrated approach to ensure plant health:
