Description
Epitrimerus is a genus of microscopic mites belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These pests are known as four-legged mites due to their anatomical structure. Because of their tiny size and habit of dwelling in sheltered areas of the plant, they are often overlooked until significant damage to the crop becomes visible.
These mites primarily attack fruit trees, with the pear rust mite being the most notable representative. They feed on the epidermis of leaves, shoots, and fruit, piercing the plant cells and injecting saliva, which triggers physiological changes in the host plant tissues and disrupts normal growth processes.
The life cycle of Epitrimerus is tightly linked to the phenology of the host plant. Overwintered adult females emerge from their hiding spots, such as bud scales or bark crevices, as soon as the weather warms in spring. They begin to lay eggs on the newly developing foliage, leading to a rapid succession of overlapping generations throughout the growing season.
The damage caused by these mites typically manifests as leaf curling, bronzing, or necrotic spots. In severe infestations, the foliage may lose its color and function, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity. Consequently, the tree becomes stressed, resulting in stunted growth, diminished fruit set, and overall poor orchard performance.
