Systematic position: The Douglas fir rust mite (Epitrimerus pseudotsugae) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, vermiform mites that specifically target the foliage of trees within the genus Pseudotsuga.
Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). It is frequently observed in forest nurseries, ornamental landscaping, and young plantation stands, particularly where the trees are stressed or growing in suboptimal conditions.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Epitrimerus pseudotsugae is synchronized with the bud burst and shoot growth of its host. Adult fertilized females overwinter in bark crevices or under bud scales. With the arrival of spring, they migrate to the developing needles to feed and oviposit, completing multiple generations throughout the growing season.
Damage and severity: Feeding activity causes distinct symptoms on the needles. Infested needles become twisted, curled, and discolored, often exhibiting yellowing (chlorosis) before dropping prematurely.
