Description

Systematic position: The pear leaf blister mite belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These are tiny, microscopic mites that specifically target the foliage of pear trees, acting as specialized sap-suckers.

Affected crops and damage: The primary host is the pear tree. By colonizing the leaves, these mites cause distinct malformations, specifically the curling and twisting of leaf margins. This damage hinders photosynthetic efficiency, directly impacting the tree's health and overall fruit yield.

Biology and lifecycle: Adult mites overwinter under the bud scales of pear trees. As the buds swell and break in the spring, the mites migrate to the young, emerging leaves. They undergo multiple generations throughout the growing season, with population peaks often occurring during periods of mild, humid weather.

Nature of infestation: Feeding activity causes chlorotic spotting and dehydration of leaf tissues. As the mite population grows, the affected leaves become rigid and curled, often turning brown or necrotic.
