Cherry slug sawfly

Eriocampa atripennis

Description

The Cherry slug sawfly (Eriocampa atripennis or Caliroa cerasi) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera, family Tenthredinidae. Adult sawflies are small, shiny black insects that are often overlooked, while their larvae are distinctively recognizable due to their slimy, slug-like appearance and olive-green or blackish coloration.

This pest targets a variety of fruit-bearing trees, primarily focusing on stone fruits such as cherry, plum, and peach. Additionally, it has been known to infest pome fruits like pear, apple, and quince. The insect is widespread and can cause significant damage to backyard orchards and commercial plantations alike.

The life cycle involves an overwintering stage as a prepupa in a cocoon within the soil. During spring, adults emerge, mate, and deposit eggs into small incisions made in the leaf surface. Depending on the geographical region and climate, the species may undergo one to two generations per year.

The feeding behavior is highly characteristic: larvae consume the upper epidermis and parenchyma of the leaves, leaving only the veins intact. This process, known as skeletonization, causes leaves to turn brown, curl, and drop prematurely. Heavy infestations can lead to complete defoliation, severely stressing the tree and reducing future yields.

Management and control strategies include several integrated approaches:

  • Cultivation of the soil under the tree canopy to disrupt the overwintering pupal stages.
  • Timely application of contact or systemic insecticides during the peak activity of larvae.
  • Use of botanical extracts or horticultural soaps for softer control in home gardens.
  • Maintaining healthy tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to help trees withstand infestation stress.
