Pear slug

Eriocampoides

Description

The pear slug, scientifically identified within the genus Eriocampoides (frequently synonymous with Caliroa cerasi), is a notable pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a widespread defoliator that affects numerous horticultural crops across various geographic regions.

The primary hosts for this pest are members of the Rosaceae family, with cherry, pear, plum, and quince trees being the most susceptible. The larvae exhibit a distinct preference for leaf tissue, often causing widespread cosmetic and physiological damage to the host canopy.

The life cycle typically consists of two generations per year. The insect overwinters as a prepupa in a silken cocoon located within the soil profile. After pupation in the spring, the adult sawflies emerge to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, which hatch into slug-like larvae characterized by a slimy, dark-colored appearance.

The feeding habit of the larvae causes severe leaf skeletonization. They consume the upper and lower epidermal layers of the leaves, leaving only the veins intact. Affected leaves turn brown, shrivel, and drop prematurely. Persistent infestation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, potentially hindering fruit development and cold hardiness.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Cultivation of the soil under the tree canopy during the winter months can destroy overwintering cocoons. During the growing season, if infestation levels are high, targeted applications of registered insecticides or horticultural soaps can effectively control larval populations.

  • Regular monitoring of the leaf surface for slime-covered larvae.
  • Cultivation of soil under host trees in autumn and winter.
  • Pruning and destroying severely infested branches.
  • Use of systemic or contact insecticides during the peak activity period.
