The Banana leaf roller (Erionota thrax) is a butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae of the order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known pest in tropical regions, specifically recognized for its specialized feeding habits on plants within the Musaceae family, often causing significant damage to commercial banana plantations.

This pest primarily attacks banana plants (Musa spp.), including various cultivars. While they show a strong preference for bananas, larvae have also been observed on coconut palms, Manila hemp, and bamboo, which allows the species to persist in diverse agricultural and natural environments.

The life cycle of the Banana leaf roller consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs individually on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae create distinctive leaf rolls using silk and leaf tissue. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, as the caterpillar consumes the leaf lamina while protected inside its rolled shelter.

Damage caused by this insect is easily identifiable by the large, tubular rolls constructed on the banana leaves. These rolls result in significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently. Severe infestations can lead to stunted plant growth and reduced fruit bunch weight, significantly impacting the economic value of the harvest.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural control, such as manual removal and destruction of the rolled leaves, is highly effective for smaller plantations. In large-scale operations, biological control using parasitoid wasps or the application of selective bio-insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis are recommended to minimize ecological impact while successfully suppressing the pest population.
