Description

The Egyptian gall mite (Eriophyes aegyptiacus) is a member of the Eriophyidae family within the order Acariformes. These microscopic mites are specialized plant parasites that induce abnormal growth, known as galls, in their host plants through their feeding activities.

This species primarily targets plants of the genus Ziziphus. By inhabiting the buds and the undersides of leaves, the mites interfere with the plant's normal physiological development, often leading to severe stunting of vegetative growth during the spring season.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults overwinter in protected spots, such as bud scales or bark fissures. As temperatures rise and growth commences, the mites emerge to infest new shoots and begin laying eggs, completing multiple generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily characterized by the formation of erineum (hairy patches), leaf curling, and distortion of young stems. Such feeding pressure weakens the plant, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately compromises the yield of the affected plants.

Management strategies for controlling Eriophyes aegyptiacus include:

  • Timed application of acaricides during the bud-burst stage to catch emerging populations.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts.
  • Encouraging natural predators where possible within an integrated pest management program.
