Aloe mite

The Aloe mite (Eriophyes aloinis) is a microscopic member of the Eriophyidae family, commonly known as gall mites. This specialized pest specifically targets succulent plants belonging to the Aloe genus. Due to their incredibly small size, these mites are virtually invisible to the naked eye, allowing them to establish significant colonies within the plant tissue long before the host shows visible damage.

The damage caused by this mite is primarily characterized by the formation of galls — abnormal tumor-like growths, warts, and deformities on the leaves and stems. As the mites feed, they secrete substances that alter the plant's cell structure. In severe cases, the apical meristem of the plant is stunted or destroyed, causing the aloe to become severely distorted and significantly weakened, eventually leading to its decline.

The life cycle of the Aloe mite is closely tied to the host plant's tissues. They prefer protected environments such as greenhouses or indoor settings where the temperature remains consistently warm. Reproduction is rapid; female mites lay eggs within the developing galls, ensuring the offspring have immediate access to nutrients. This biological adaptation makes the mite particularly difficult to eradicate once it has penetrated deep into the plant's structure.

Identification often relies on spotting the structural changes rather than the pest itself. Gardeners should look for stunted growth, misshapen leaves, and suspicious swelling or brownish crusty formations. Since the pest resides internally, contact-based insecticides are rarely effective. Control requires a combination of physical removal of infested tissue and the application of systemic treatments that can travel through the plant's sap.

• Isolate affected plants immediately to prevent the spread to healthy succulents.
• Prune and destroy all visibly galled tissues using sterilized tools.
• Sanitize cutting tools with alcohol between each cut to prevent cross-contamination.
• Apply systemic acaricides labeled for use on indoor plants to target the internal population.
• Implement strict quarantine protocols for any new Aloe specimens introduced to the collection.
