Description
The apricot gall mite (Eriophyes armeniacus) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, within the Acariformes order. These are microscopic mites that primarily affect stone fruit trees, showing a high level of host specificity towards apricot species.
This pest mainly infests the buds, leaves, and tender shoots of the apricot tree. By feeding on the plant tissue, it disrupts the physiological processes of the host, leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit production in affected orchards.
The biological cycle is marked by overwintering of fertilized females in bud scales or bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the developing shoots and leaves. The mite completes multiple generations during the growing season, which enables rapid population expansion if conditions are conducive to their survival.
Damage typically manifests as leaf deformities, curling, and the formation of characteristic galls. These injuries cause physiological stress to the tree, impair photosynthetic activity, and lead to poor bud development, eventually resulting in lower yields and increased susceptibility to winter damage.
